3 students walking away from a University building set in a green backdrop

Dear colleague

Thank you for your interest to become Director of Advancement and Communications at Durham University. This is a particularly exciting time to join the university. Our Strategy 2017-2027 sets out a bold vision and at its heart is a commitment to build upon and enhance our global reputation for excellence.

Durham University is founded on philanthropy, established through a generous gift by Bishop van Mildert in 1832 that included Durham Castle and much of the land and buildings we still occupy today. Since then, the loyalty and generosity of the friends of the university have factored in establishing Durham as one of the very best universities in the UK.

Building on this history, the university is now seeking to appoint a new leadership role, Director of Advancement and Communications, to oversee an ambitious Advancement strategy that will help secure our financial future and achieve the global awareness that the university deserves.

The Director will bring leadership experience across the Advancement portfolios of Development and Alumni Relations, and/or Marketing and Communications, working with internal and external senior stakeholders as well as operating in an international context. We are seeking candidates with a track record of developing and implementing strategy that has had significant financial gains.

We welcome applicants who have an affinity for higher education and can demonstrate knowledge of the challenges and opportunities the sector is facing. You will work especially closely with myself, the Pro Vice-Chancellor Global, in shaping the university marketing, communications, policy engagement and fund-raising policies, and setting a strategic direction for fundraising and alumni relations. You will also work with colleges and departments to create and oversee plans for the support of alumni relations and development.

The Director will lead the strategic planning for Advancement, working closely with peers and stakeholders across the university. You will be an inspirational leader who brings demonstrable experience of empowering teams to achieve challenging goals. Internal communication and influence will be a strength and you can show how your strategic inputs have made significant impacts on your organisation.

If you feel you have the skills, experience and perspective we are looking for, we very much look forward to hearing from you.
